Tia Hemiller and Nicole Seekamp both tallied 15 points and seven rebounds as the South Dakota women’s basketball team held off Fort Wayne to win 73-72 in the Gates Sports Center on Thursday night. The win is South Dakota’s 12th in its last 14 games and keeps the Coyotes on top of the Summit League standings.

South Dakota (15-4, 5-1) scored seven unanswered points during a 1:31 stretch in the final three minutes to take control of a game that saw four lead changes and four ties in the final six minutes. Hemiller hit a jumper to tie the game at 66 with 2:04 remaining, and Seekamp hit the go-ahead 3-pointer on the next possession to make it 69-66 with 1:29 to go. Seekamp then assisted a basket by Margaret McCloud on the next USD possession to make it 71-66 with 49 seconds left.

After Fort Wayne’s (7-12, 1-5) Haley Seibert ended the run with a 3-pointer to make it 71-69 with 41 seconds to go, Hemiller added the game-deciding points on a jumper with 16 seconds left. Kamilah Carter would tally Fort Wayne’s final points on a 3-pointer with nine seconds remaining.

Lisa Loeffler added 10 points, five rebounds and three assists to the Coyote effort, while Raeshel Contreras scored nine points and tallied three assists. McCloud tallied eight points while Hemiller led USD in assists with four.

Seibert tallied 31 points to lead Fort Wayne, shooting 10-of-14 from the field and 6-of-8 from 3-point range. Keanna Gary added 12 points for the Mastodons while Courtney Ogle finished with 11 points.

Fort Wayne held advantages in points in the paint (30-26), points off of turnovers (16-11), second chance points (10-6) and bench points (20-16). South Dakota outrebounded the Mastodons 41-30, shot 93 percent from the free-line (14-of-15) and finished with two more field goals (27-25).

Fort Wayne led by as many as 10 in the first half, and had a 20-9 run over an 11-minute stretch to lead 30-20 with 3:41 remaining until halftime. Seibert scored eight of her 11 points in the half during that stretch. USD shot 2-for-19 and had seven turnovers in that stretch, and finished the half shooting 25 percent (8-for-32) and with a total of 11 turnovers. Fort Wayne shot 32 percent (9-of-28) in the first half and had nine turnovers.

USD scored seven of the last nine points in the first half to trail 32-27 at the break. Seekamp led the Coyotes in the half with eight points while Hemiller added six.

The second half saw more offense from both teams as USD shot 61 percent (19-of-31) and Fort Wayne shot 59 percent (16-of-27). The teams changed the lead seven times in the half. Hemiller and Contreras led the Coyotes with nine points each, while Seibert tallied 20 points for Fort Wayne.

USD led by as many as six in the second half (53-47 with 9:56 to go) and outrebounded the Dons 17-10 in the frame. Fort Wayne was 6-of-8 from 3-point range in the half, but only 2-of-8 from the free-throw line.

South Dakota will travel to Indianapolis to take on IUPUI on Saturday at 6 p.m.
