Update on Iowa Governor Branstad’s Hospitalization

Virus & Dehydration Blamed

Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad is staying the night at a hospital with what doctors believe is a viral illness.

Branstad’s office says doctors are keeping him overnight “out of an abundance of caution.”

The 68-year-old was taken by ambulance to Iowa Methodist Medical Center on Monday after he required assistance at a ribbon-cutting event in a Des Moines suburb.

Dr. Mark Purtle says physicians believe Branstad has a viral illness with dehydration.

Purtle says doctors conducted tests and ruled out other contributing factors, including cardiac issues.

The governor has been given IV fluids.

He’s canceled his public appearances for Tuesday.
