Jury Finds Joseph Patterson Guilty Of Murder
Found Guilty Of Killing Girlfriend's 2-year-old Son
A jury of nine women and three men returned their verdict just before 9 p.m. Tuesday — guilty on all counts.
Joseph Patterson was found guilty of 2nd degree murder, manslaughter and aggravated battery in the death of 2-year-old Tyrese Ruffin. Vikings running back Adrian Peterson was the boy’s biological father.
The jury began deliberating 2:30 Tuesday afternoon.
Immediately after the judge read the verdict for the jury, there was commotion inside the courtroom.
A family member of Joseph Patterson started yelling towards the victim’s family and friends, gesturing with his hands, and yelling expletives at them.
He was escorted outside the courtroom.
Ty’s mother Ashley Doohen was crying. She and her family was escorted into the Lincoln County State’s Attorney’s office shortly after.
As the jury left the courtroom, a member of Doohen’s family jestured to them saying, “Thank you. Thank god.”
The jury has heard testimony for a total of ten days from dozens of different witnesses, including police officers, medical professionals, Patterson’s ex-girlfriend,and even the victim’s daycare providers.
The prosecuting attorneys spoke to the media about the trial following the verdict.
Attorney Laura Shattuck said, “Really, what I wanted the jury to think about was the defendant, his actions, his thoughts and why he did this.” She said. “It takes a certain kind of person to abuse a child, a defenseless child, and I just really wanted the jury to focus on that.”
As for Patterson, he will remain in jail without the opportunity for bond. He will be sentenced for the crime at a later date.
