Special August Hunting Season For Canada Geese Eliminated

South Dakota wildlife officials are doing away with a special August goose hunting season aimed at reducing the numbers of resident Canada geese.
The August Management Take season was added several years ago to try to reduce crop damage from the birds. At the time, both bird numbers and hunter participation were high.
Game, Fish and Parks waterfowl biologist Rocco Murano says that both have dropped off. He says hunter numbers went from 3,600 in 2012 to 1,700 last year, and harvested geese went from 37,000 to 10,000.
Rocco says the August season could be restored in future years if the goose population or crop depredation incidents rise.
