Mitchell Police Make 2 Arrests In Kidnapping, Robbery

Authorities still searching for person of interest

Police in Mitchell have arrested two men in relation to a kidnapping, robbery that occurred Thursday morning.

Mitchell Detective Don Everson says that 28-year-old Alek McKezo Rock and 21-year-old Marco Antonio Sherman were both arrested for first-degree kidnapping of a 66-year-old man.

Sherman was arrested after a short man hunt in the Mitchell Hardee’s parking lot. In addition to the kidnapping charge, he faces first-degree robbery, possession of less than two ounces of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia charges. If convicted, he faces up to life in prison and $100,000 in fines.

Rock was also charged with possession of stolen property. He was arrested without incident at his residence. If convicted he faces up to life in prison and $60,000 in fines.

Authorities are still searching for 36-year-old Vanessa Hakl, a person of interest in the kidnapping and robbery case. She is 5-feet-three-inches tall and weighs about 150 pounds, with dark hair and hazel eyes.

According to Everson, around 6 a.m. Thursday, Rock and Sherman walked the man from his apartment in the 100 block of East Third Avenue to his car that was in the area. He says Sherman may have held a knife against the man’s back while walking with him.

Everson says that Rock and Sherman then forced the man into his car. He says Rock may have blind-folded the man while in the vehicle. Then, Rock, Sherman and two women drove the car away with the man inside.

The group ended up 19 miles southeast of Mitchell in Hanson County where the man was forced to take off his clothes and was left there Everson says. The man was found, naked, less than an hour later walking.

Two rings that belong to the man were stolen along with his car and wallet. The rings are described as gold bands, one with a blue star on it. The wallet and the vehicle have been recovered. The vehicle was found 300 block of East Hanson Avenue in Mitchell Thursday.
