Man Arrested in Connection With Fire at Arena Storage

During the overnight hours SFPD and SFFR responded to a structure fire at the Arena Storage complex located at 1601 W. 2nd Street.

One entire building containing numerous individual storage units sustained heavy fire and smoke damage from a fire that originated inside one of the storage units.

During the initial investigation a tenant of that building was contacted at the scene.

That subject, William L. Vance, 52, was later arrested and charged with Reckless Burning, Failure to Report Dangerous Fire and Possession of Firearm by Convicted Felon.

Sioux Falls, South Dakota: Sioux Falls Fire Rescue responded to a report of a structure fire at Arena Storage on W. 2nd Street just after 11 p.m. Saturday night.

On our arrival there was heavy smoke and fire showing from a 40’x150’ storage building.

The storage building had approximately 40 units and the building was three quarters involved in fire. Crews worked to stop fire spread and salvage property in unburned units. Crews remain on scene working to extinguish hot spots.

There were no injuries to residents or firefighters. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Sioux Falls Fire Rescue responded with 12 fire trucks and 4 support units with 53 personnel. Sioux Falls Fire Rescue was assisted by South Dakota Air National Guard Fire Department, Sioux Falls PD, and Paramedics Plus Ambulance.

Sioux Falls Fire Rescue would like to remind residents to exercise caution when using flammable liquids and remember proper storage in approved containers.
