Coyotes Clobber ORU
USD Improves To 13-2 After Sweep
South Dakota senior outside hitter Audrey Reeg and redshirt-sophomore outside hitter Rachel Schmidt recorded 14 and 13 kills, respectively, as the Coyotes swept Oral Roberts 25-23, 25-16, 25-16 Sunday afternoon at the Sanford Coyote Sports Center.
With the win, USD is now 13-2 on the season and is 2-0 in Summit League play. This is the eighth sweep of the year for the Coyotes. Oral Roberts drops to 8-8 on the season and 0-2 in the Summit.
Reeg led the match in kills. She added eight digs, three assists and one service ace. Schmidt tallied two blocks assists to go along with her kills.
Junior setter Brittany Jessen kept the offense going with 35 assists. She has 30-plus assists in 13 matches. She also had nine digs and five kills.
On defense, sophomore libero Lauren Mattison recorded 14 digs. Senior middle block Lindsey Brown, junior middle blocker Kelly Law and Jessen each recorded three block assists.
South Dakota jumped out to an early lead in the first set and was up 4-1. The team held the lead for most of the set. With the Coyotes up 18-13, the Golden Eagles went on a 9-5 run and cut the lead to 23-22. Jessen swatted down a kill and ORU answered with a kill of their own to close the gap once more. Brown sealed the first set with a block as USD won 25-23.
The Coyotes came out on fire for the second set and went on a 7-1 run before Oral Roberts called a timeout. The Coyotes totaled four kills and two blocks during the run. Reeg swatted down two kills as Schmidt and Law added one apiece. Law was also a part of both blocks. She combined with freshman outside hitter Elizabeth Loschen for the first block and Schmidt for the second.
The Golden Eagles would answer the call and closed the lead to two, 15-13. Coming out of a timeout, USD went on another 7-1 run to take a 22-14 lead. South Dakota went on to win the second set 25-16 and took a 2-0 match lead. The Coyotes won the third set 25-16 and swept the Golden Eagles.
South Dakota continues Summit League play Friday at 7 p.m. as North Dakota State comes to Vermillion, S.D.
