Augustana Homelessness Documentary To Be Shown At Los Angeles Film Festival
In March, KDLT News introduced you to two Augustana students who spent last winter filming and interviewing some of the homeless population in Downtown Sioux Falls and put their work together in a documentary.
Sarah Kocher and Maria Lavelle titled their film “Over the Bridge.” It premiered on campus last spring, and has since been showcased at small film festivals across the country and abroad.
Now the film makers have the chance to take their piece all the way to Hollywood. “Over the Bridge” was accepted into the 2016 “Awareness Film Festival” in Los Angeles. The women say they started the film as small project, and never imagined it could have gotten this far. Their original goal was to show there is a homelessness issue in Sioux Falls.
“We have been in touch with some of the shelters and they said there has been in increase in the amount of people showing up just to spend some time or donate clothes. So they said after the premiere they experienced a positive increase,” Lavelle says.
The film will be screened at the La Live Regal Cinema Theatre on Oct. 14.
