Daniel Murillo faces murder, manslaughter charges after assault victim dies

A Sioux Falls man accused of assaulting a man outside Union Gospel Mission is facing new charges after the man he is accused of attacking, dies.

According to Public Information Officer Sam Clemens, 31-year-old Daniel Murillo is facing second-degree murder and manslaughter charges after Robert Allen Petersen, 61, died from his injuries during the assault. He died on Wednesday.

Police say that Murillo attacked Petersen by hitting him on the head with a chair several times on Sunday. They say Murillo continued to beat him with a piece of the chair after it broke.

Both men involved in the incident were transients. Police say that the attack was unprovoked.

An autopsy conducted Wednesday has been sent to the State’s Attorney Office.
