Jackrabbit Women Win Home Opener Over Creighton

Young leads SDSU past Creighton

The South Dakota State University women’s basketball team opened the second half by scoring eight-straight points to take control of Friday’s season-opening contest against Creighton and record a 63-56 win in front of 2,180 fans at Frost Arena.
With a 30-24 halftime edge, the Jackrabbits got baskets from senior Clarissa Ober and junior Macy Miller to go with four points by senior Kerri Young, who led the Jackrabbits with 17 points. Ober finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds-her seventh career double-double-and 5 blocked shots. Miller added 13 points to go with a team-high 5 assists. Junior Ellie Thompson recorded 15 points and a game-high 3 steals.
Audrey Faber led Creighton, 0-1 and the preseason favorite to win the Big East Conference, with 12 points. MC McGrory added 10 points.
South Dakota State opened the first quarter with eight-straight points as Young, Thompson and Miller each scored during the run. Creighton answered with a 9-2 run to cut the Jacks’ lead to one, 10-9, on a basket by Jaylyn Agnew with 3:32 left in the quarter. Thompson and Miller closed the quarter with baskets for a 14-9 lead.
The Jackrabbits closed the second quarter with a 7-4 to take a 30-24 lead at the half.
Following Thompson’s 3-point field goal with 2 seconds left in the third quarter, South Dakota State held a 48-32 lead. The Jackrabbits held Creighton to 28.1 percent shooting (13 of 46) in the first three quarters.
Creighton opened the fourth quarter with an 11-3 run to cut the Jacks’ lead to eight, 51-43, with 6:59 to play. Creighton came within five, 56-51, after a conventional three-point play by Ali Greene with 2:31 remaining. The Jackrabbits closed the contest by making five of six free throws in the final 49 seconds.
