A Dell Rapids man is dead after his estranged wife’s new boyfriend shot and killed him authorities say.

According to Capt. Jason Gearman with the Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office, authorities were called to the area of 9th Street and LaDelle Avenue at 8 p.m. Tuesday after a passerby found Jonathan Puttmann, 39, with a gunshot wound to the head, lying in the street.

Gearman says Alex Wittenberg, 23, of Dell Rapids was arrested at the scene for shooting Puttmann after the two men had an altercation. Wittenberg has been charged with first-degree and second-degree manslaughter charges.

Gearman says Wittenberg is the boyfriend of Puttmann’s wife, 38-year-old Jamie Puttmann. She was also at the scene of the crime. Gearman says the couple had been separated, but whether a divorce had been filed is unclear.

Puttmann was transported to the Dell Rapids hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The weapon, a 9mm handgun used to kill Puttman was found at the scene.
