Great Plains Zoo’s Rare Rhino Named
The rare rhino calf at the Great Plains Zoo now has a name.
The public selected Komati (KO-mah-tee) as the calf’s new name. He is named after a river in South Africa.
The zoo received over 350 votes to name the rhino.
Komati and his parents, Jubba and Imara are three of 58 remaining Eastern Black Rhinos in North America. There are just 740 left in the wild and are considered critically endangered.
Komati is the third Eastern Black Rhino to be born at the zoo as part of their breeding program.
