Augie Women Defeat Mankato
Vikings Win 89-80
The Augustana women’s basketball team (8-2, 3-0 NSIC) earned a weekend sweep after earning an 89-80 win over Minnesota State (4-1, 1-1 NSIC) in front of 2,285 fans at the Sioux Falls Arena.
The first-quarter started out slow for Augustana as they weren’t able to get on the board till the 6:54 mark. After trailing 7-2 the Vikings though got into their rhythm going on a 6-0 run to take their first lead at 8-7. The Mavericks jumped back on top though taking a 9-8 lead but that didn’t last long. Augustana went on a 14-5 run to end the quarter and take a 22-12 lead into the second.
The Vikings hot shooting continued in the second. They opened the quarter on a 12-7 lead that included two triples from Allie Koehn. Minnesota State was able to minimize the damage in the final six minutes of the quarter as both teams scored 14 points in the final six minutes giving Augustana a 48-33 lead at the break.
Augustana opened the third quarter with back-to-back three’s by Lynsey Prosser and Shelby Sellandbefore MSU was able to use a 10-0 run to make it 54-45. Augustana then scored six straight to regain their 15-point advantage with less than five minutes left in the quarter. Minnesota State was able to score the final five points of the quarter, but Augustana maintained a double-digit lead as they entered the fourth quarter.
After being outscored in the third 19-14, Augustana opened the fourth quarter with 13 of the first 15 points to earn a 21-point advantage with seven minutes left in the game. Minnesota was able to cut the Vikings lead to 14 but Augustana quickly got it back to a 20-point lead at 81-61. The Mavericks made one last push late in the game but the Vikings didn’t budge. MSU was able to get a last second three as time expired to cut the deficit to single digits, but Augustana walked away with an 89-80 victory.

Shelby Selland had an all-around great game for the Vikings. Selland was second on the team in scoring with 15-points while leading the game with nine rebounds. Selland added one assist and one block to her statistical totals for the night.

Augustana will be on the road next weekend as they travel to North Dakota to take on Minot State at 6 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 9 and the University of Mary at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 10.
