JazzFest 2017: What to Expect, Who to See

The festival officially kicks off at Yankton Trail Park on Thursday

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Sioux Falls Jazz and Blues Society is once again bringing large acts to the JazzFest stage this weekend.

The festival officially kicks off at Yankton Trail Park on Thursday.

“March Fourth,” “The Robert Cray Band,” and “Jonny Lang” will hit each the Main Stage, along with a handful of other musicians.

Organizers spend the better half of a year scheduling nearly 30 different acts for the event’s two stages.

Now less than 24 hours out, planning shifts to setting up the venue itself.

“At the very last minute here, we’re just making sure that all of the things that we’ve put together for the last several months are coming here, getting set up, and deliveries are being made. All the final details,” said Executive Director Rob Joyce.

Those who have attended JazzFest in the past know there will be a variety of food, vendors, stages, entertainment and activities throughout the weekend.

But something new to the 2017 festival: paying more for your beer.

“For the last 15 years we haven’t increased our beer prices and our drink prices, and we’re going to have to go up to $6. That’s not too out of reason, but I think people ought to know that was necessary because costs of doing a festival continue to go up and that’s how we make a lot of our money,” said Joyce.

The city has also issued a new ‘no smoking’ policy on city property, meaning no cigar sales this year, and people are asked to refrain from lighting up.

For those who have never attended the event before, JazzFest organizers say don’t be thrown off by the name, there’s a lot more than just jazz!

“JazzFest is really a music festival with a lot of different opportunities. On our second stage we have hip hop, on our second stage we have rock, on our main stage we’re going to have some rock in addition to some jazz and mostly blues. So I think you just have to be ready for experiencing some new things and trying out some new music. And it’s free!
