Vikings Begin 2017 Training Camp
Zach Borg Reports From The Start Of The 52nd Camp In Mankato
MANKATO, MN — For the 52nd straight year and final time in Mankato, football season is underway! The Minnesota Vikings have begun their training camp though it’s a bit different than the last 51 versions because this year only rookies and players who have yet to accrue a full season of NFL experience had to report for the opening day of practices.
But that gives us the chance to catch up with a local favorite, Augustana alum C.J. Ham, who’s trying to become the team’s starting fullback in his second year with them. Last year he was mostly on the practice squad, and this season he has a chance to possibly be leading the way for a talented Vikings backfield.
“It’s actually not much different in the scheme. We were doing a lot of the same plays as we did last year even with a new coordinator. But yeah, like you said, playing fullback is a little bit of a different position for me. I just got to learn the ins and outs of it.”
And there is some high priced talent if CJ does indeed win that fullback job.
Dalvin Cook, the rookie from Florida State and 2nd round pick, he is in camp today and working out today as well as LaTavius Murray the veteran. He did not work out today, he’s from the Oakland Raiders. We’re expecting those two guys to split the duties in the backfield replacing Adrian Peterson.
As for the rest of the Vikings, including Parkston native Riley Reiff, they all report on Thursday and begin practice. We’ll be with them then and we’ll also be back tonight at six o’clock and ten o’clock in sports with more with C.J. Ham.
