Sioux Falls Man Facing Several Charges After Hours-Long Standoff
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KDLT) – Police say a 34-year-old Sioux Falls man faces several charges after setting off an hours-long hostage situation at a Sioux Falls Hotel.
Police say Troy Chase surrendered after a four and-a-half hour standoff at the Dakotah Lodge motel.
Police say it started around 2:45 Friday afternoon with a report of a man acting odd and damaging windows at the old courthouse museum in downtown Sioux Falls.
When they arrived, Chase had already left.
Police say he then told a woman at 7th and Phillips Avenue that he would kill her if she didn’t give him the keys to her vehicle. He then drove to the Dakotah Lodge Hotel on Russell Street.
“Through the process of the investigation, we tracked the vehicle he had taken from this woman to the hotel complex located behind me. And we were able to tell by hotel surveillance footage a particular room that he went into,” said Capt. Loren McManus with the Sioux Falls Police Department.
Police say Chase barricaded himself a room where a 28-year-old woman and a 5-year-old female child were staying. Police are unsure of their relationship but say that Chase and the woman were acquaintances.
The child was released early in the incident but woman remained in the room with Chase as a hostage before he surrendered around 8 p.m.
Chase is charged with first degree robbery, two counts of kidnapping, burglary, grand theft, possession of a stolen vehicle, and intentional damage to property.
No one was hurt during the standoff.
