Scheels Hosts ‘DockDogs’ Competition

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – For the 8th year in a row, Scheels is holding a hunting expo in front of their location on 41st Street in Sioux Falls. But the event is actually drawing in more pets than people.

Along with the 20 plus vendors, dogs are getting in on the fun, competing in a ‘DockDogs Competition’. The furry friends compete for the longest and highest jump, as well as the fastest toy retrieval. People from all over travel for the competition, including one dog mom from West Des Moines, Iowa. This will be her 8th season competing with her 9-year-old Golden Retriever.

“It all starts with toy drive,” explains Shannon Christensen. “If you don’t have a toy drive, the dog is not going to want to do it. And also, the love of the water. But at home, I don’t have a pool to practice in, so don’t think you have to have a pool to do this. Take them to a river, take them to a lake, it doesn’t matter. Just get them that toy drive and retrieve it back for you.”

The dogs did not have to qualify to compete in this weekend’s event. But winning a division does help the competitors make it to the ‘World DockDogs Championship’, which takes place at the end of October.
