High Demand For Sexual Assault Resources; The Compass Center At Max Capacity
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The state of South Dakota ranks second in the nation for the most sexual assaults per capita, and The Compass Center in Sioux Falls is proof of that.
The counseling center currently has a waiting list of more than 50 people.
The executive director Michelle Markgraf attributes the high demand for services to more victims feeling comfortable enough to talk about their assault, “and because of that, they’re looking for resources. Which makes us very happy that they’re trying to heal and to come for counseling. And unfortunately that also means we have a lot more people coming through our doors and we are just not able to keep up with the need at this moment.”
Even though the compass center is at maximum capacity, Markgraf says people who are in dire need of counseling or outreach services should still reach out for help.
