FULL STORY: Man Arrested For Child Porn After Police Say Caretaker Discovered Images

A 47-year-old Sioux Falls man has been arrested for child pornography after police say another person discovered the images on his cell phone. After a search of the suspect’s phone, police say they found hundreds of inappropriate photos.

On Aug. 11, police say a caretaker visited Aaron Knutson’s home on the 3000 block of East 26th Street. A week later he was arrested on child pornography charges.

Sioux Falls Police Officer Sam Clemens said, “While she was inside there she noticed some images on his cell phone that she thought may have been consistent with child pornography. She left and called police and reported that.”

According to court documents, Knutson’s phone rang and the caretaker swiped it to tell him who had called. That’s when she discovered several pictures of infants and young children. Police say a search of his phone uncovered nearly 300 images of child porn.

Clemens said, “Most cases with child pornography, there’s a lot of images that are found. Very rarely do we just find a handful. So, we may be talking hundreds or even thousands of images.”

Court documents say Knutson told police that he has been looking at child porn for about ten years, up to two times a day. The documents say Knutson admitted that he’s aware that it’s morally wrong and that others have been arrested for it. He told police that he only collects images and does not distribute or manufacture them.

“It doesn’t matter if they’re downloading it or they’re sharing it, all of that is illegal,” said Clemens.

Knutson is facing three counts of child pornography, considered felonies in South Dakota.

Clemens said, “The detective will complete their investigation, send the information over to the state’s attorney’s office, and they will determine what’s an appropriate number of charges, and really, what the appropriate charges are as well.”

Knutson is out of jail on a PR bond. His first appearance in court is scheduled for the morning of Sept. 12.
