Henry Belts Three Bombs In Birds Win At Sioux City
Nears Team Record After 6-1 Win
Sioux City, IA – Behind Jabari Henry’s three home runs and eight quality innings from Bo Hellquist, the Sioux Falls Canaries topped the Sioux City Explorers, 6-1, Sunday evening at Meyer Field at Lewis & Clark Park.
After three scoreless innings from Hellquist and Keith Picht, Jabari Henry and Chris Jacobs’ led off the top of the fourth with back-to-back solo home runs to give the Birds’ a 2-0 lead.
For Henry, his league-leading 27th home run added to his lead over Kansas City’s Kevin Keyes, while Jacobs’ solo shot gave the Birds’ first baseman his 20th home run of the season.
And after another scoreless inning from Hellquist in the bottom of the fourth, Henry launched another blast, this time a two-run shot and his 28th of the season, to extend the Canaries’ lead to 4-0 in the top of the fifth.
But Henry wouldn’t stop there. Leading off the top of the eighth inning, Henry again launched a solo home run to left, his third home run of the day and 29th of the season, to make it 5-0.
Henry’s 29th home run tied Tim Pahuta for the Canaries single-season home run record, set in 2013. And with one game to play in the 2017 regular season, Henry is one short of the American Association single-season record.
Henry finished the day 3-for-5 with three home runs, three runs scored and four RBI.
On the mound for the Canaries, Hellquist kept the Explorers off the scoreboard until the eighth inning, allowing just one run on five hits while striking out five over 8.0 innings pitched.
The Canaries got an insurance run on Burt Reynolds RBI single, scoring Dan Motl from second base in the top of the ninth to extend the lead to 6-1.
Nicco Blank relieved Hellquist to start the bottom of the ninth and worked a 1-2-3 frame to give the Canaries a 6-1 victory.
Hellquist picks up the win for the Canaries, who move to 45-54 on the season with the win, while Picht takes the loss for the Explorers, who fall to 45-54 on the year with the loss.
