Two Horses Killed In Pickup Vs. Trailer Crash

MINNEHAHA Co. – A pickup traveling south on 478th Avenue east of Sioux Falls landed on Interstate 90, hitting a horse trailer Sunday afternoon.

The accident happened around 12:15. South Dakota Highway Patrol says the pickup was approaching I-90 when it crossed the center line, traveled in the wrong lane of traffic, through grass and launched onto the westbound lanes of I-90. While airborne, the pickup hit a westbound horse trailer that was hauling two horses. Both of the horses were killed, and a portion of the interstate was closed for 45 minutes.

The pickup driver, 71-year-old Gene Geringer, was transported to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries. South Dakota Highway Patrol says charges are pending.

Alcohol, speed and drugs are not considered to be factors in this crash.

The driver and passenger of the horse trailer were not injured.

Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Officer, Renner Fire Department, Brandon Police Department and MedStar Ambulance all assisted with the crash.
