Full Story: Two Adults, One Child Dead In Murder-Suicide
LENNOX, S.D. – The Lennox community is in shock Tuesday night after a tragic discovery. Three people, all family members, were found dead in their home in the small town. The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office says strong evidence indicates it was a murder-suicide.
The Sheriff’s Office is not releasing the names of the victims Tuesday, but they say it was a relative who found the bodies around 10 a.m. in the home on 400 block of Main Street. That includes the bodies of two adults, a female and a male, as well as their 8-year-old son.
“There’s evidence that multiple shots were fired, probably 5 or 6 were fired,” says Lincoln County Sheriff Dennis Johnson.
It’s a scene no one expected; yellow caution tape surrounding the intersection near Poplar and Main Street.
“It seemed like construction tape,” says Drake Wood who lives nearby. “My first thought would not have been a crime scene or that something else was going on.”
Police spent majority of the day near the backyard of the home. All the while, neighbors trying to wrap their heads around what happened.
“It does tear at your heart because you realize how lucky you are in a sense,” says Wood. “I would say heartbreaking, heartbreaking news.”
Wood says especially because a child was involved. The Lincoln County Sheriff says there are two other children in the family. They were at school, and are safe.
When a member of the media asked why the 8-year-old was not in school too, the Sheriff said, “I don’t, I don’t know why he wasn’t in school.”
The crime scene is close to the Lennox Middle and Elementary schools. The school district held the kids on lock-down briefly as a precautionary measure.
Law enforcement is not releasing which of the three dead is the suspect, but they say a handgun was used.
“There’s just certainly strong indication from the layout, what’s in the house, where the people are at, that just again, very strongly suggests that this is a murder-suicide,” explains Sheriff Johnson.
“Violent acts are not something that is not common or that we would find anything but shocking,” says Wood.
A woman who knows the family, but did not want to go on camera says she’s never had an incident with the family, calling them nice. Others say the neighborhood is safe, and that there are usually kids playing in the area, making the incident even more tragic.
