SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — The Augustana volleyball team fought hard, but dropped a tough 3-1 match to No. 22 Wayne State on Halloween night at the Elmen Center.

“We just couldn’t quite get it done tonight,” head coach Jennifer Jacobs said. “We had our moments, played hard for the most part but didn’t squeeze it out. It’s getting to that time in the season where everyone is fighting tooth and nail for a postseason spot and we’ve got to play that way too.”

Senior outside hitter Lauren Waite led the way for the Vikings with 19 kills. The Sergeant Bluff, Iowa native added four digs and three blocks on the night.

Middle Blocker Ashley Wilson continued to hit the ball well as the Sioux Falls, S.D. native  accounted for 10 kills while recording a team-best .333 hitting percentage. The senior is hitting .315 on the season, a mark that puts her in the top-15 in the conference.

Courtney Place, the junior from Okabena, Minn., who ranks second in the NSIC in kills added another 13 tonight. The outside hitter also tallied 11 digs and was the only Augustana player to record a double-double Tuesday night.

As a team, the Vikings hit just .146 while Wayne State accumulated  a .193 hitting percentage. Augustana had 15 total blocks on the evening to the Wildcats 18.

Wayne State improves to (16-10, 9-7 NSIC) in 2017.

The Vikings return to action this weekend when they travel to Minnesota Crookston on Friday, Nov. 3 for a 5 p.m. first serve.
