Coyotes Blank Jacks as Dotseth Leads the way

 

BROOKINGS, S.D.—South Dakota junior Hayley Dotseth led the pack with 14 kills and 11 digs to give South Dakota the win over South Dakota State with scores of 25-22, 25-22 and 25-20. The win over the Jackrabbits give the Coyotes a 3-2 lead in the South Dakota Showdown Series.

Who Stood Out

Alongside Dotseth’s 14 kills, Brittany Jessen contributed nine kills on 17 attempts to give her a .471 hitting percentage while tallying 34 assists. Elizabeth Loschen hammered eight more kills for the Coyotes.

It was a combined effort on the defensive end for South Dakota. Anne Rasmussen led the way with 15 digs. Dotseth added her 11 as Mehana Fonseca recorded 10 digs with Kristina Susak contributing nine more.

For the Jackrabbits, Ashlynn Smith led the way with 10 kills and 11 digs. Hannah Jellema and Macy Smith each added nine to the South Dakota State offense. Defensively, Ellie Benson tallied 22 digs in addition to Smith’s 11.

Turning Point

After pulling off wins in a tough first two sets, South Dakota came out hungry to take the third set. It was a battle at the net right from the start of the third. A kill thrown down by Taylor Wilson put the Coyotes up 9-6. Fonseca stepped behind the line and served up an ace to extend the lead further (10-6). A kill hammered down by Jessen pushed the Coyotes lead 11-6. South Dakota would go on a 6-3 run to win the match 25-20 with Raquel West serving the last two points to seal the deal.

“Anytime we can win at State in three is a positive day,” South Dakota head coach Leanne Williamson said. “We passed the ball fairly well, which allowed us to get all our hitters involved, including Britt. Hayley took a lot of swings and controlled the game well.”
