Corrections Department Ending Shoveling Program Serving Elderly Residents
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – After 16 years, South Dakota’s Corrections Department is cutting a snow shoveling program serving elderly and disabled residents due to rising costs.
Under the project, minimum security inmates shovel sidewalks and driveways in Sioux Falls, Yankton, Pierre and Rapid City. Officials say this often requires departments to pull in correctional officers to supervise during their off-duty hours or pay them overtime.
They say as many as 400 addresses statewide are listed as properties that need help clearing driveways and sidewalks.
