Augie Women Tip-Off Season with Win over Truman State

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Junior Shelby Selland’s 17 points and career-high 12 rebounds guided the Augustana women’s basketball team to a season-opening 72-57 win over Truman State Monday night at the Elmen Center.

Logan O’Farrell added 14 points, five rebounds and had a game-high five steals, just two steals away from matching her career-high.

The Vikings (1-0), got off to a hot start, beginning the contest on an 8-0 run and never looked back. Augustana, which never trailed in the game, led the Bulldogs 25-18 after the first quarter.

In the first period, the Vikings shot 59 percent from the field and knocked down five three-pointers. Junior Lynsey Prosser connected on two of those shots from behind the arc and scored eight first quarter points.

Both team’s had trouble connecting on shots in second period, but Augustana still held the edge, outscoring Truman State 16-13 in the second frame. O’Farrell drained 10 of her 14 points for the Vikings, four of those points coming from the line. Augustana’s defense tightened up as well as the Bulldogs shot just 20 percent from the field. The Vikings lead 41-31 at the break.

Points were tough to come by in the third quarter as well, but Augustana remained tough and outscored the Bulldogs 11-6. Senior Allie Koehn drained a three-pointer with 2:37 left in the third period to give the Vikings a 52-35 lead. The 17-point margin was the largest lead of the night.

Paige Peterson, the first one off the bench for Augustana, tallied six points, six rebounds and gave the Vikings their second 17-point lead in the fourth quarter.

Katie Jaseckas led the Bulldogs (1-1) with 12 points on the night.

Augustana shot 39.7 percent from the field and 38.1 percent (8-21) from the three point line. The Vikings forced 15 turnovers but had 17 of their own.

Augustana returns to action Thursday, Nov. 16 when they host William Penn at 6 p.m. inside the Elmen Center.
