Exchange Student Shares Traditional Korean Dish Ahead of Winter Games

Americans in South Korea for The Winter Games may not have to look too far to find food that tastes like home. The western influence has become quite prevalent in South Korea, a local exchange student from the small country tells KDLT news. But the traditional dishes in South Korea are light and delicious, said Jiwon Yoon.  She and her host-sister, Shannon White of Flandreau, made one of the most traditional dishes one might find – Beef Bulgogi (grilled marinated beef).

Beef Bulgogi

1 lb flank steak, thinly sliced

5 tbsp soy sauce

2 1/2 tablespoons white sugar

1/2 cup chopped green onion

2 tbsp minced garlic

2 tbsp sesame seeds

2 tablespoons sesame oil

1/2 tsp ground black pepper

Directions:

Place the beef in a shallow dish. Combine soy sauce, sugar, green onion, garlic, sesame seeds, sesame oil, and ground black pepper in a small bowl. Pour over beef. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour or overnight.

Fry the bulgogi in a frying pan on high heat until cooked through. Serve with rice.
