Chelsea Cadwell

There aren't a whole lot of golfers, let alone high-schoolers, who put in as much time at the range as Chelsea Cadwell.

Washington Golf Coach Doug Rinken says, “She is very committed. She works hard all summer long. She works hard at every practice we have. She's probably the prime example of what you want to have in somebody that wants to work to get better.”

Cadwell, who plays for Washington, practices anytime she can, including before school and sometimes even during her lunch break.

Rinken says, “She's just probably the cream of the crop. Not only is she willing and able, she just loves it.”

Cadwell was runner-up at last year's state tournament, but even coming so close couldn't keep her down.

Rinken says, “Never have I seen her get distraught or angry or anything else and that's pretty important in the game of golf.”

In fact, she eventually ended up teaming up with Katie Scholten, the state champ from Brookings, to win the SDGA's state two-woman championship.

Cadwell's commitment to the game goes beyond just playing though. During high school, she helped out with Willow Run's Junior Golf Program as well.

Cadwell says, “Just seeing the younger kids out here is just, I don't know. I like to help them and just to see their passion for it is really cool.”

When her senior season is over, Cadwell will head to Kansas City to play Division One golf at UMKC. And from there, her coach says even the pros aren't out of the question.

Rinken says, “I don't think it's too much to ask. It would take some improvement to get to that level, but I think she's one that could do it.”

For Cadwell though, the pros aren't even a thought right now, although she does know what she wants to do in the future.

Cadwell says, “Definitely something with golf; whether it's teaching or coaching. I'd love to be like a college coach or something Division One level.”

Then she can share her level of commitment with everyone she teaches.
