The South Dakota House has passed a bill that would extend unemployment benefits for workers in an approved training program.
Job seekers from a declining occupation would get an additional 26 weeks of benefits if they enroll in training that would help them find new work in a high-demand occupation.
Rep. Tim Rounds, R-Pierre, said the legislation would help South Dakota access additional federal funds, so the added benefits would cost the state just $800,000. The added benefits would expire in July 2013.
The bill passed 62-7 and now heads to the state Senate.
