Married to the Game: Ryan and Julie Jansa

Bookmark and Share

This past weekend, Ryan Jansa came up just short in the South Dakota Men's Amateur, finishing in a respectable second place. But despite his individual achievements, he's best known for his success with his wife Julie in couples play.

Most people stray away from golfing with their significant others, Ryan and Julie Jansa, our Taco Johns Athletes of the Week embrace it.

"Golf is how we met," Julie said, "We both played college golf and that's how we met and it definitely brings us together and now we've got the perfect foursome, we go out with our son and our daughter and they'll play with us once in a while in the evenings too, and it's just the perfect foursome, it keeps us together."

Of course, everything's best kept in moderation.

"We play when it's time to be competitive," Ryan said, "But outside of competitive golf we pretty much don't play golf. Unless it's a quick nine holes with the kids or something like that, but Julie's schedule is very busy during the summer with First Tee and the SDGA Junior Tour so we try to make do with what we can."

When they do play, the Jansas are very good. Ryan and Julie have won six husband-wives tournaments together. And individually they can hold their own pretty well too, but each of them would admit, they're better together.

"There are many times," Julie said, "Like today when we were out there, I left him with a lot of three or four foot putts so having him out there saves me."

"To hit it into the water virtually every opprotunity you get," Ryan said, "And then have your partner hit it on or close is a real relief."

And how again do they keep from taking any frustration they might have out on each other?

"I think she's just really patient with me," Ryan said, "It's a lot like at home. She needs to be patient with me at home too so I think that transfers to the golf course. Julie's a lot more even keel than I am, I tend to wear my emotions on my sleeve a little bit more."

Julie's got a different reason...

"He's one of the best, he's won the most state titles of anyone out there," Julie said, "There's a reason for that. He just doesn't give himself enough credit for it."

Julie says that despite her time with First Tee and the SDGA, she never gets burnt out with the golf course, especially when she's playing with her husband.
