Fans of anime are gathering at the Sioux Falls convention center tonight. Anime is a Japanese style of motion picture animation. Sogen Con., a 3-day anime convention is expected to draw 350 to 500 people. The event features artists, panel discussions, actors, vendors and games.
It may sound like a foreign language, that's because in most cases it is. Anime is the abbreviated Japanese word for animation. 350 to 500 fans are expected this weekend...at today's registration many showed up early and in costume.
Organized by volunteers, at one point the convention was in danger, so organizers reached out to fans via facebook to raise money.
Chairman rob doss says they collected more than 15 thousand dollars in a little more than 2 weeks.
The money pays for things like the convention center and flights for voice over actors who take to the stage and later meet with fans. Doss says it feels great to know that the support for the convention is there and he’s is grateful the anime community can come together in their time of need.
Jamie Fritz of Watertown is one of the artists showing off her work. She does fan art, which is her take on popular established characters, as well as her own original anime artwork.
Jamie says Sogen Com is fun because people can be themselves.
The gathering is called Sogen con...because the word "sogen" means prairie in Japanese. Admission is 20 dollars for a day pass.
