A Look Back on the Fried Favorites of the 2011 Sioux Empire Fair

Bookmark and Share

When it comes to the fair, one of the biggest draws would probably be the food.

This Weekend KDLT News Today's Phil McIlrath and Kelly Smith headed out to the fair to uncover some of the best guilty pleasures of the 2011 Sioux Empire Fair.

When it comes to the fair Deep Fried is Delicious.

"I went to get a corn dog that was as big as my forearm and yes I ate the whole thing,"said Sioux Empire Queen, Heather Johnson.

But this year visitors to the Sioux Empire fair are finding more than just the common fair favorites.

"Our most popular seller would have to be the deep fried snickers,"said Aaron Winters.

"And Aaron Winters knows his stuff. He takes a frozen snickers gives it a good coating of funnel cake batter and then gives it a bubbly oil bath.

But if Snickers aren't your style try a new twist on an old favorite...Deep Fried Oreos.

"They're tasty and you can't do on your everyday ritual; they're kind of sinful,"said Owner of Back Street Corner Grill, Maria Sanchez.

That recipes pretty much the same. Instead of dunking these guys in milk, a dip in some batter and then off to the fryer.

But one of the biggest and most unusual draws this year would have to be the fried Kool-Aid bites. Basically donut holes with Kool-Aid mix incorporated in the batter and one again given a golden sizzle.

"When you bite in you get that burst of sugar and it is surprisingly really good,"said Jamie Wiechmann  General Manager of Rookies.

But if you're more of a carnivore at heart the donut cheeseburger might be right up your alley.

a quarter-pounder seared and sandwiched between a glazed donut.

That wraps up our look at the fair's fried favorites. Kelly gave the Kool-Aid bites a two thumbs up, while Phil put in his endorsement for the Glazed Donut Burger!
