Birds Swept By Sioux City

SIOUX CITY, Iowa. – The Sioux Falls Pheasants mounted a tremendous ninth-inning comeback on Sunday night in Sioux City, only to see the Sioux City Explorers bounce back for a 7-6, extra-inning win.
Down 5-0 in the top of the ninth, the Pheasants loaded the bases with one out, and Kevin Carby knocked home two runs with a single to center field. After Joe Anhtonsen walked, Gus Milner singled home Rob Lind. Reggie Abercrombie followed with a run-scoring fielder’s choice. Mark Shorey then ripped a two-run triple to the right field corner to overtake the Explorers, 6-5.
Pheasants closer Aaron Cotter could not shut the door on Sioux City in the ninth. With one out, Derek Schmerhorn singled, moved to second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on a groundout. With two strikes, Ray Serrano hit a weak ground ball toward short on which Anthonsen had no play, and Schermerhorn scored to tie the game.
Cotter stayed for the bottom of the 10th with the game still tied at 6-6. Brian Bistagne singled with one out. He stole second and advanced to third when Anthonsen muffed the throw from Pheasants catcher Matt Powell. After Dustin Jones walked, Wally Backman Jr. lined a base hit down the left field line to bring home the winning run.
Aaron Cotter (1-2) suffered his third blown save of the year and took the loss. Jonathan Plefka (3-3) earned the victory in relief for pitching a perfect 10th inning.
The Pheasants lost a season-worst seventh straight game while being swept by Sioux City for the second time this year.
Carby led the Pheasants at the plate with a 3-for-5 performance and two RBI.
Chris Salberg turned in a quality start for the Pheasants, allowing nine hits and two earned runs in six innings. He matched a season high with seven strikeouts.
The Pheasants begin their final road series of the year with a four-game set against Kansas City that starts at 7:05 p.m. on Tuesday, August 23.
