A half dozen tribal college presidents urged federal education officials to improve Native Americans' access to higher education Wednesday ahead of Friday's visit from Education Secretary Arne Duncan.
Candeska Cikana Community College President Cynthia Lundquist says tribal colleges and universities do their best with what they have, but they could do so much more with additional funding. Thomas Shortbull, president of Oglala Lakota College, wants education officials to urge President Obama to sign an executive order that would separately fund tribal colleges and universities rather than including funding as part of a larger education order.
Duncan will be in South Dakota on Friday and will host a rural education roundtable at Rosebud Elementary School before giving the commencement address at Sinte Gleska University in Mission.
