Bellet Wins Morningside Invite for DWU

MITCHELL, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University men’s and women’s golf teams started the 2011-12 season Wednesday afternoon at the Morningside Invitational, and both teams had an individual finish in the top two.
Senior Dani Bellet won the event and set a new course record to lead the DWU women and sophomore Austin Hieb tied for second at the event, held at Whispering Creek in Sioux City, Iowa. As a team, the Tiger women finished in second and the men tied for sixth.
Bellet, who won her third Great Plains Athletic Conference Golfer-of-the-Year award in 2010-11 and took second at the NAIA National Championships, shot a 73 to win the event by four strokes. She shot a 35 on the front nine and a 38 on the back. Her score broke the course women’s record of 74, which she set as a freshman. Also for the Tiger women, freshman Talia Peters shot an 87, sophomores Kamie Roesler and Chelsea Burback shot 88s and freshman Jenna Winckler shot a 94.
DWU shot a team score of 336 and finished a stroke behind Morningside, which won the event with a 335. The Tigers finished 23 strokes ahead of Northwestern, which finished in third with a 359.
Hieb, a sophomore from Aberdeen, S.D., shot a 72 to finish in a tie for second with Iowa Western Community College’s Lance Lawson in the men’s competition. Morningside’s Brandon Thompson won the event with a 71. Hieb was the only Tiger in the top 10 individually. Josh Korn shot an 80, Chase Kristensen and Max Bell carded 83s and Eddie Chia finished with a 93.
As a team, Dakota Wesleyan carded a 318 and finished tied for sixth with Dordt College. The Tigers were two strokes behind the Northwestern B team, which finished in fifth with a 316. Morningside won the invite with a 298 and Iowa Western was second with a 301.
The DWU women are back in action Thursday, Sept. 8, when they travel to Orange City, Iowa, for an invite hosted by Northwestern College. The men go to Yankton, S.D., on Friday, Sept. 9, for an invite hosted by Mount Marty College.
