MITCHELL, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University men’s and women’s golf teams started the 2011-12 season Wednesday afternoon at the Morningside Invitational, and both teams had an individual finish in the top two.

Senior Dani Bellet won the event and set a new course record to lead the DWU women and sophomore Austin Hieb tied for second at the event, held at Whispering Creek in Sioux City, Iowa. As a team, the Tiger women finished in second and the men tied for sixth.

Bellet, who won her third Great Plains Athletic Conference Golfer-of-the-Year award in 2010-11 and took second at the NAIA National Championships, shot a 73 to win the event by four strokes. She shot a 35 on the front nine and a 38 on the back. Her score broke the course women’s record of 74, which she set as a freshman. Also for the Tiger women, freshman Talia Peters shot an 87, sophomores Kamie Roesler and Chelsea Burback shot 88s and freshman Jenna Winckler shot a 94.

DWU shot a team score of 336 and finished a stroke behind Morningside, which won the event with a 335. The Tigers finished 23 strokes ahead of Northwestern, which finished in third with a 359.

Hieb, a sophomore from Aberdeen, S.D., shot a 72 to finish in a tie for second with Iowa Western Community College’s Lance Lawson in the men’s competition. Morningside’s Brandon Thompson won the event with a 71. Hieb was the only Tiger in the top 10 individually. Josh Korn shot an 80, Chase Kristensen and Max Bell carded 83s and Eddie Chia finished with a 93.
