USF Drops Two In Volleyball

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (September 2, 2011) - The University of Sioux Falls volleyball team lost both of its matches on the first day of the season-opening USF Active Ankle Invite. The Cougars are hosting the two-day, seven team event on campus at the Stewart Center and at the YMCA Family Wellness Center.
Following today’s matches, the Cougars start the season with an 0-2 overall record.
In their regular season home-opening match, USF fell in three straight sets to the Tigers of Fort Hays State (25-16, 25-14, 25-14). Sophomore Brittni Merchant (Norfolk, Neb.) led the hitting campaign with seven kills, while sophomore libero Tashayla Person (Shawnee, Kan.) dug 10 Tiger hits. Collectively, the Cougars amassed 22 kills, 21 assists, 30 digs and six blocks.
In the nightcap, the Cougars fell to future conference rival Minot State, 3-1, (25-15, 25-14, 23-25, 26-24). Alyssa Chambers had an outstanding match, posting 13 kills on a .478 hitting clip with nine total blocks (4 solo, 5 blocking assists). Freshman Charlee Nelson (Mitchell) led the setters with 18 assists in the match. Person racked up nine digs and Chanda Goedken (Farley, Iowa), Emily Johnson (Platte, S.D.) and Nelson each picked up six digs in the loss.
USF will conclude the two-day tournament tomorrow with a pair of matches against Bemidji State and Waldorf College. The Cougars will take on the Beavers at noon, followed by a matchup against the Warriors at 4:00 p.m. Both matches will be streamed live from USFCougars.com
