LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kelli Fiegen and Kaitlin Klingemann both made the all-tournament team at the Jayhawk Invitational, but the Jackrabbits slow start against host Kansas today kept the Jackrabbits from a perfect weekend, as the Jayhawks swept the Jacks 3-0.
The loss, by the set scores of 11-25, 21-25 and 23 -25, drops the Jacks to 5-2 on the season. Kansas stays perfect at 6-0 with the win.
“We had a hard time recovering from a sluggish start today,” head coach Phil McDaniel said. “Once we regained our confidence though, we were at least able to compete.”
Kelly Herrmann led the SDSU offense with seven kills, as no Jackrabbit reached double-digit kills in the match. Lexi Fowler and Emily Palmer shared team-high honors with seven digs.
Caroline Jarmoc led the Jayhawks offense with 12 kills. Allison Mayfield added 10 kills and 11 digs to complete the double-double.
KU scored in bunches early, and put the Jacks away early in the first set. SDSU fell behind in the second set 19-14, but scored five straight points to tie the match at 19-all and prompt a timeout from the Jayhawk bench. Kansas scored three straight out of the timeout on the way to the 25-21 win.
The Jackrabbits kept it close throughout the third set and led late at 21-19 and 22-21, but KU scored three of the last four points to secure the sweep and keep their perfect season in tact.
The Jacks look to get back on the winning track on Tuesday, when they open the home schedule against Nebraska-Omaha in Frost Arena at 7 p.m.
