A high speed chase ends with a man behind bars. This is at least the 4th pursuit in the past 6 months. Two of those ended with a fatal crash.
Late Tuesday night, 31 year old Willie Ricardo White led police on a chase down Minnesota Avenue.
The yellow Mustang passed police in the outer most part of the road which isn't a passing lane. Police then pulled him over at the intersection of 18th and Minnesota.
"As they were talking to the driver he wouldn't comply with their instructions. They wanted to get him out of the car and talk to him but eventually he just took off," said Sioux Falls Police Officer Sam Clemens.
The Mustang sped down Minnesota reaching speeds of nearly 80 miles per hour. The police followed the car for nearly 4 blocks but then had to back off because they were reaching dangerous speeds.
Chief Doug Barthel said, "They'll weigh all the risks and whether or not it's worth pursuing or not and if we have enough information, or if it's just not serious of an offense they'll terminate the pursuit."
This is White's 5th DWI arrest. He was also driving with a revoked license. White continued driving down Minnesota Avenue and traveled across 4 lanes and then lost control, going over a sidewalk and hitting a tree, but that's not where the pursuit ended.
Police say White got out and ran. He was then arrested near the intersection of 10th and Spring.
White is being charged with aggravated eluding, hit and run, and several traffic tickets.
