Changes to Sioux Falls' 2nd Year of Summit League Tourney

We are now into the month of March, and for many sports fans that means one thing: March Madness.

For the second year, Sioux Falls will be hosting the Summit League Tournament this weekend.

Hopes are set high and the anticipation is building as the news spreads: the Summit League tournament is back in town.

"This is their time to peak and there is a lot on the line," said Tom Douple, Summit League Commissioner.

This is the second year Sioux Falls will be hosting the tournament, and officials have already won the renewal bid for the next two years.

"We're tweaking it the second year and of course we're here for two more years after that, so we're excited about that. We think probably by the end of the run we're going to have things down pretty well," said Douple.

So this year don't be surprised to see some improvement on the court. As your watching those basketball games, one of the differences you'll notice from last year's Summit League are these new video screens provided by Daktronics. They're six feet wider and three to four feet taller.

After last year's record setting attendance and sponsorship, the league hopes the buzz continues.

"We'll the main thing for us is to really roll out the Red Carpet. Let the Summit know how important they are in our community," said Teri Ellis-Schmidt, Executive Director for the Sioux Falls Convention and Visitor's Bureau.

Last year alone the tournament brought in  $2 million dollars to the Sioux Falls economy.

"We're here in the middle of snow and just around the corner from spring and its a real nice shot in the arm for the community," said Ellis-Schmidt.

And just as important, is the national attention from the Summit League, allowing Sioux Falls the chance to take center stage.

So hopefully, this tournament will be nothing but net.

The tournament starts on Saturday and both the SDSU women's and men's basketball teams will be playing on Sunday. The women play at 2:30 and the men at 6pm.
Make sure to tune into KDLT Sports for all your highlights during the tournament.
