Fast: Jeremy Blount, USD

Bookmark and Share

Saturday, USD pulled off a win over the defending FCS Champion, the number one team in the country, the Eastern Washington Eagles. One would think that'd be a pretty complex task, but the Yotes, particularly our Taco John's Athlete of the Week, wide receiver Jeremy Blount, make it sound pretty simple.

"We just went real hard, executed everything right," Blount said, "We had a good practice everyday from Sunday to Thursday, and it just happened, we just won."

Blount was a big catalyst for the win. Picking up a touchdown in the first half that nearly blew the roof off the dome.

"The touchdown was so amazing." Blount said, "I saw the corner playing back deep and the safety playing up top. I split between both of them, I knew they couldn't match my speed from watching on film and it was just touchdown ball."

Blount's quickness is something Head Coach Ed Meierkort is hoping to utilize all season in many different facets, whether it's running routes or returning punts or kicks.

"We made a statement," Meierkort said, "We gotta get it to him a lot of different ways, with returns he's got a burst of speed that nobody else has and we handed it to him, we flipped it to him a few times, he did a very good job for us."

The senior from Tampa, Florida is excited about the added responsibility.

"The past three years I was just a specialist," Blount said, "This year they wanted me at wide receiver I mean I always played wide receiver, but the slot wide receiver, I wanted to bring more speed to that and the coaches saw that ever since I ran a 4.3 for the NFL scouts the coaches wanna put me in the game and so playing special teams and playing offense, I make a big difference in a game."

So where on the field is Blount most dangerous?

"Most dangerous? Punt returner," Blount said, "Special teams, that's where I'm most dangerous."

That showed on Saturday, and if it continues to show throughout the season, look out for USD to pick up some more big wins.
