CVB: Jacks Sweep Western Illinois

Bookmark and Share

The South Dakota Statevolleyball team closed its Summit League opening weekend on Saturday with a 3-0 win over Western Illinois, cruising to 25-16 and 25-18 wins in the first two sets and then coming from behind to win the third set 29-27.

“I thought our focus was very sharp tonight in the first two sets,” head coach Phil McDaniel said. “I thought Western came out with a lot of energy in the third set and caught us off guard, but with a couple of good defensive stops, we were able to gather ourselves and finish the match.”

The win boosts the Jackrabbits record to 10-4 overall and 2-0 in The Summit League, while the Fighting Leathernecks fall to 7-5 overall and 0-2 in league play.

Kelli Fiegen again led the Jackrabbit attack with 10 kills and just one error in 20 swings for a .450 hitting percentage. Fiegen also added three block assists and a pair of solo blocks. Bailey Philippot tied for team-high honors with 10 kills off the bench and added a trio of block assists as well. Kaitlin Klingemann pitched in with eight kills, with a match-high four block assists and a pair of service aces.

Shay Birath led the Jackrabbit defense with 19 digs, Kelly Herrmann added 10 digs to go along with her nine kills.

Samantha Fournier led all players in the match with 14 kills, while Ann Miller added 11 kills and 12 digs in the loss.

After two quick sets in which SDSU never trailed, the Jacks trailed by as many as five points in the third set found themselves in a 23-19 hole late in the third set when erupted for a 4-0 run to tie the set at 23-all.

Four more ties and a pair of lead changes followed before the Jacks finally strung together two points for the 29-27 win.

A quick turnaround awaits the Jackrabbits, as they board a bus on Sunday bound for Kansas City, Mo., where the UMKC Kangaroos await the Jacks for a match on Monday at 7 p.m. The Kangaroos opened Summit League play over the weekend with 3-0 losses at Southern Utah and at Oral Roberts.
