The Mitchell City Council is considering whether to require candidates to file campaign finance reports.
Councilman and former state legislator Mel Olson has been pushing the idea. He says he was amazed to discover when he filed to run for the council that no campaign finance reports were required. Local candidates for school, county and state offices must do so.
Mayor Lou Sebert says he worries that the additional paperwork might chase away prospective city candidates.
