SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (September 22, 2011) - The 2011 Pan American Games men’s basketball coaching staff was completed Wednesday with the naming of Jermaine Byrd of the NBA Development League Tulsa 66ers as the second USA assistant coach. Byrd will join Dale Osbourne (Tulsa 66ers) and former USF assistant basketball coach, Nate Tibbits. Byrd played under Tibbits while he was an assistant coach at the University of Sioux Falls from 2003-05. The duo helped the 2003-2004 Cougars team to their best season in school history, where USF finished the season with 26 wins before falling to Bellevue University (Neb.) 72-60 in the NAIA Final Four.
In 2010-11 Byrd was the video coordinator for the Tulsa 66ers after serving as the team’s basketball operations assistant during the 2009-10 season.
Prior to his arrival in Tulsa, Byrd served as the Director of Basketball Operations for the University of Houston women’s basketball program from 2006-08, and began his coaching career at the University of Sioux Falls as a student assistant coach for the women’s basketball team during the 2005-06 season.
As a player, Byrd spent his first two collegiate seasons with Richland Community College (Texas) before transferring to the University of Sioux Falls. In his first season with the Cougars, Byrd started 13 games, averaging 10.9 ppg., 2.7 rpg., 6.1 apg. and 1.4 spg. The following season, 2004-05, he was named GPAC All-Conference second team after leading the conference in assists. In 31 games for the Cougars, he recorded 14.0 ppg., 3.7 rpg., 4.1 apg., and made a team high 41 3-pointers as the team finished with a 20-11 record.
Nate Tibbets is currently the head coach of the Tulsa 66ers of the NBA Developmental League. Prior to coaching in the NBDL, Tibbetts was hired as an assistant coach at the University of Sioux Falls. Shane Murphy, who coached Tibbetts as an assistant coach at USD, brought him on board and it was the beginning of a successful four-year run together. In his four seasons at USF, the Cougars posted a record of 92-44 (.676), including two trips to the NAIA Division II national tournament.
The Pan American Games, held every four years in the year prior to the Olympics, are being held Oct. 13-30 in Guadalajara, Mexico. The men’s basketball competition, which features eight teams, is being conducted Oct. 26-30.
