Muilenburg Honored by GPAC

MITCHELL, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University football team came up just short against Morningside College in its quest to stay undefeated this past weekend, but a handful of big plays kept the Tigers in the game and Morningside on its toes.

Two of those big plays came at the hands of Anthony Muilenburg. The junior wide receiver caught two touchdown passes to keep the Tigers, ranked No. 13 in the NAIA at the time, within striking distance of the then eighth-ranked Mustangs Saturday afternoon in DWU’s 28-26 loss– its first of the season.

For his big game, Muilenburg has been named the Great Plains Athletic Conference Offensive Player-of-the-Week, it was announced Monday morning by the league. This marks his second weekly honor of the year. He also won the award after catching three touchdown passes in DWU’s 21-14 win against Hastings College on homecoming.

Saturday afternoon, Muilenburg got the Tigers on the board when he snagged a 58-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jon Bane to tie the game at 7-7 in the second quarter. His second touchdown of the day, this one a 29-yard catch, brought Dakota Wesleyan back within two, 21-19,early in the fourth quarter and helped set up a last-minute score, onside kick and late-game opportunity.

Muilenburg finished the day with seven catches for 107 yards. He currently leads the league and is third in the NAIA in receptions per game (6.67) and is second to teammate Euedell Clayton in receiving yards per game (80). He is also sixth in all-purpose yards (110) and is second to teammate Josh Endres in scoring per game (10).

Muilenburg and the Tigers try to get back on track and stay at the top of the GPAC when they travel to Crete, Neb., to take on Doane College Saturday, Oct. 22. Doane, Morningside and Dakota Wesleyan are all tied for first with identical 5-1 overall records and 4-1 marks in the league. The Mustangs beat Doane 31-16 on Oct. 8.
