It's a department of state government in both South Dakota and Minnesota that has invested over $3.5 billion dollars combined in rural communities since 2009.
We spoke with Elsie Meeks, director of rural development for South Dakota, and Colleen Landkamer, director for Minnesota about rural development between both states Tuesday on the morning show.
According to both directors, rural development is all about creating jobs. Rural development helps finance fire stations, fire trucks, build hospitals, nursing homes, and schools. In 2010 alone, South Dakota rural development funded projects totaling $22.5 million in 19 rural communities.
