The union representing Sioux Falls firefighters is negotiating with Sioux Falls Fire Rescue administrators on changes in annual physical fitness testing.
Both sides say the move is not related to complaints that testing has been unfair to women and older firefighters. Some union members earlier this year said the tests do not accurately represent what firefighters do at a fire scene. Fire Chief Jim Sideras says officials are trying to have the training and testing more accurately reflect tasks that firefighters are expected to handle.
Sideras says officials also are addressing safety risks in the testing. Union local President Mike Gramlick says there have been injuries in the past.
Sideras and Gramlick expect changes to be completed by the new year.
