27 million people have osteoarthritis and that number is expected to increase to 40 million by 2030.
Osteoarthritis is a disease that takes its toll on our joints and causes the need for many knee and joint replacements each year.
Dr. Steven Meister, a family practice physician from Marshall, MN and knee patient, Vickie Kolstad joined us Tuesday morning to tell us how we can better take care of our joints and tell us about some other options to relieve knee pain without surgery.
Dr. Meister gave a few tips for dealing with osteoarthritis:
1. Talk to your doctor about a plan first!
2. Lose weight! A 10-15 pound weight loss can make a big difference for people with knee pain.
3. Work on strengthening the quad muscles since 90 percent of knee stability involves the quadricep muscles.
4. If your knee locks or gives way see an orthopedic surgeon.
