He's considered the leading expert on the music of the masters of ragtime and stride piano and Friday night, for one performance only Butch Thompson and his trio will be performing at the Orpheum Theather in Sioux Falls.
Brienne Maner of the Sioux Falls Jazz and Blues Society joined us Friday morning to tell us more about Butch Thompson and the SFJB's second performance in their 13th annual concert series.
For 12 years, Butch Thompson was the in-house pianist for NPR's A Prairie Home Companion. He was with the show from 1974-1986, but still appears quite often as a guest. His concert explores a wide range of early jazz and blues repertoire including classic ragtime by composer Scott Joplin, New Orleans jazz by Jelly Roll Morton, early Chicago blues, boogie woogie and stride piano. Tonight he will also be performing some holiday hits to the style of stride.
Tickets are still available by calling (605)-335-6101. For more information you can visit the Sioux Falls Jazz and Blues website at www.sfjb.org
