New Year's Weather

Bookmark and Share

An area of low pressure will continue to work its way eastbound over the next 24 hours bringing light snow or a rain/snow mix to Minnesota and northern Iowa.  Along with the snow high wind speeds will accompany the storm.  The bulk of the activity has come to an end west of the I-29 corridor, but as temperatures slowly cool we could see some slippery spots Sunday morning, as any left over rain on the ground will freeze.  Winds will also play a huge role over the next 48 hours not only making it feel colder outside, but causing blowing and drifting snow, mainly east of the South Dakota/Minnesota border. WINTER STORM WARNINGS and WINTER WEATHER ADVISORIES remain in effect for western Minnesota and northwestern Iowa through midnight, where the main concern will be blowing snow, lowering visibilities.  Picked up around .06 inches of liquid precipitation in Sioux Falls, with only a trace of actual snowfall.  In the Sioux Empire everything started out as sleet, then transitioned over to a rain/snow mix, before transitioning over to very light snow.  Behind the system we’ll just see cooler temperatures and high winds.

As we near the end of 2011, it is hard to believe how warm and dry it has been.

The latest Winter snowfall to occur is still a long ways away, that being in February. Here in Sioux Falls we are still waiting on our first one inch snowfall, but instead of snow falling this week we were experiencing rain!

Thursday evening's rainfall fell mainly along and east of I-29 bringing Sioux Falls a third of an inch of rain and almost a half inch in Spencer, Iowa. Rain chances are going to usher in the New Year as well. A system will bring chances for a rain/snow mix to all of South Dakota and the rest of the quad states. Temperatures should be warm enough to allow all rainfall until after sunset when a mix of snow and rain is possible.

By midnight it will be very breezy and temperatures will fall on New Years day as cold air filters in from the north. High Wind Warnings and Wind Advisories have been posted through Sunday as we can expect sustained winds out of the north northwest around 20 to 30 and gusts up to 50 mph are possible.

High Wind Warnings are mostly along the Missouri River Valley and West and the Wind Advisory is east river.
