Jacks Seniors Pace Victory

CEDAR CITY, Utah – South Dakota State’s senior inside-outside tandem of Jennie Sunnarborg and Jill Young combined for 39 points, leading the Jackrabbit women’s basketball team to a 66-50 win Monday night at Southern Utah.
SDSU improved to 10-7 overall and 5-1 in The Summit League. The Thunderbirds remained winless in league play at 0-5 and dropped to 4-12 overall.
The Jackrabbits led wire to wire, racing out to an 11-0 lead behind seven points from Sunnarborg in the first four minutes of the contest. SUU cut the margin to four points, 19-15, with eight minutes to play in the first half before SDSU put together a 16-4 run to build a 16-point lead.
D.J. Norman and Hailey Mandelko connected on consecutive three-pointers in the closing minutes of the half to pull SUU to within 35-25 at intermission.
SDSU again struck quickly to open the second half with a 7-2 spurt to build the lead back to 15. The Thunderbirds responded by cutting the deficit to six points on two occasions, the last time at 52-46 on a Carli Moreland putback with 8 minutes, 29 seconds to play.
From there, the Jackrabbits wore down the home team on both ends of the floor. SUU managed only one field goal the rest of the way, allowing SDSU to end the game on a 14-4 run. The Jackrabbits also forced 23 turnovers, while tying a season low with 10 miscues of their own.
Sunnarborg finished with a game-high 22 points, while Young tallied 17 on 5-of-10 shooting from behind the arc. Ashley Eide contributed 13 points, nine of which came in the second half.
The Jackrabbits ended the night 24-of-63 from the field, 38.1 percent, including 9-of-28 from behind the arc. At the line, SDSU converted 9-of-12 attempts, 75 percent.
SUU was led by freshman Hailey Mandelko with 21 points. Andrea Jones added 11 points, while Kimie Hawkins recorded a game-high 10 rebounds.
The Thunderbirds were 17-of-43 from the field, 39.5 percent, including 5-of-9 from three-point range. SUU struggled at the stripe, going 11-of-19 for 57.9 percent.
After trailing in the rebounding category most the night, the Jackrabbits rallied to hold a 36-35 edge on the boards. Leah Dietel tallied eight rebounds, six of which came on the offensive end.
The Jackrabbits return to action Saturday, hosting UMKC in the 20th annual Lamb Bonanza. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. at Frost Arena, followed by the men’s game at 7:30 p.m.
